HOME AND LANDSCAPE DESIGN
MUST COMPLEMENT EACH OTHER

The key to a breathtaking residence is not just the architectural style of the home alone.  It’s the total image of the home and the mature, majestic landscape design that envelopes the residence.

Consulting a Landscape Architect at the beginning of the site planning and design process for the residence can greatly assist in the creation of the exterior design elements of the home.  “A carefully considered landscape plan employs plant materials and hardscapes that focus attention on architectural details,” say Alec Michaelides and Kenneth Lemm, principals and landscape architects at Land Plus Associates.  It can also assist with the masking of blank exterior walls that are necessary for privacy or floor plan reasons.

For example, says Lemm, the decision to select French doors versus windows can affect not only the balance of a room or interior furniture placement, but also could limit the potential for planting areas and patio designs. “We make design decisions to balance and enhance the total image of the residence whether it’s viewed from outside the house, or from the inside looking out.”

The architectural style of the residence also has a bearing on the type of plant materials chosen and their placement.  “It’s absolutely essential that both the architectural team and the landscape designers work together to create a finished property that looks like it’s been there forever,” Michaelides says.
